to begin with

Autumn 2008/Winter 2009

The idea was born sometime during the autumn of 2008, following Kultur Shock's European tour. Sprecho, having been to four of their gigs in less than 6 months came up with the idea of doing a stop animation video for Lazy and went to Finci with it. The exact chain of events is unclear as things tended to happen during alcohol fuelled nights in a tiny third-floor flat close to the Westeinde hospital. Finci worked on the script, Sprecho learned about stop animation and made a couple of test scenes together with Lejla and Finci. Neda studied for her Open Uni course, giggled and played cards with Mak.

Soon enough, the scope of the project grew and the then-bystanders became officially involved. The team now consisted of Sprecho, Finci, Lejla, Neda and, for a short while, Mak . At some point Mirko joined the team as film editor and Boban as sound editor. Sprecho drew up the story-board and created the puppets for the introduction, bags of clay and a desk for the scene were hauled up to the flat, more test scenes were filmed and litres of alcohol consumed. All was well.

Spring/early summer 2009

The project chugged along happily for a while, but then the two couples decided to move to bigger flats and, having moved, realised that neither of the flats were big enough to accommodate the scene and accompanying paraphernalia. A studio was needed. The team asked around and two e-mails and a visit to Baklust (do go there on your next visit to the Hague) later, the team were in possession of a set of keys to a studio in De Illusie (thank you, Lisanne).

July 2009

Serious work started. Lisanne emptied out the space, the scene and the camera were moved in, a lovely person lent the team his camera tripod, two huge windows were covered with plastic bags.

August 2009

Filming of the test scene began in earnest. To their consternation, the team realised that the camera battery needed to be recharged occasionally. This problem was solved by Jakov who donated the quick release gadget for the tripod.

The project was presented during the Illusie anniversary party on 22 August and officially became the most popular stop animation film that-hasn't-even-been-started-yet ever.

The end of August saw the completion of the test-scene filming and the photographs were handed over to Mirko for editing.

September 2009

This was a quiet period as Lejla and Sprecho drove around Sicily for two weeks and Neda and Finci slept and ate in Ghent for a week. The filming started towards the end of the month.

October 2009

October saw a flourish of activity from Finci and Sprecho as they nearly finished the introduction. Lejla and Neda were otherwise engaged, the former with study, the latter with advanced pregnancy and Lorna.

November 2009

No real activity from the humans, however, Sprecho's trusty laptop decided to die, taking the source material for the last scene and scenes 4 and 24 with it. Who needs back-up after all?

Mirko finished editing the teaser, Sprecho updated the web site.

01.12.2009

Lejla, Neda, Sprecho, Finci and Lorna met at the studio to decide on the course of action.

03.12.2009

Lejla, Sprecho and Neda redid the final scene.

05.12.2009

Finci, Sprecho and Neda redid Scene 4.
